The coach & horses

Exterior signage scheme, gilded and signwritten fascias and corner sign for The Coach and Horses pub in Soho.

Following the takeover of the iconic The Coach & Horses, Fuller’s Brewery instigated a sensitive refurbishment to ensure the long-term survival of the building and cellars.

The signage was decided to be the only ‘new’ element of the refurb, which had to retain the original classic red and gold colour scheme and wording (boldly proclaiming itself to be ‘The West-End’s Best Known Pub’), but  with a new lettering style and layout. The aim was to fully preserve the existing familiar charm of the pub’s exterior, whilst enhancing and highlighting the beautiful features of the building.

A touch of extra victorian grandeur was given to the lettering on the pub’s corner sign and fascia’s, with a 23ct gold gilded and burnished lettering style, and decorative touches signwritten in black and vermillion.

The interior of the pub remained almost entirely unchanged. One of the only additions was a plaque for the ladies toilet, painted to mimic the original sign on the gents, which is executed in delightful wooden marquetry.
